  3. St. Louis, refugees

    The JDC produced this film to record what it thought would be a successful effort to save over 900 Jews, including 200 children, by sailing them from Nazi Germany to Cuba on the ship the St. Louis in 1939. When Cuba refused to allow the passengers to land, the ship sailed to the Miami area where the U.S. government also barred the refugees' entrance. The St. Louis languished in the waters around Cuba while the JDC searched for countries to accept the refugees.     The Pollak family papers consists of civil documents, diplomas, photographs and memorial albums relating to the Pollak family of Liptovsky Svaty Mikulaš, Czechoslovakia before, during, and after the war. Also included are images of Albert Pollak and other Slovakian Jews performing forced labor in a Slovak Labor Battalion in Svety Jan, Czechoslovakia, circa 1940-41.

  9. KZ: Pictorial report of five concentration camps. Pictorial report of concentration camps

    A copy of the “KZ: Bildbericht aus fünf Konzentrationslagern” [KZ: Pictorial report of five concentration camps] pamphlet published in Germany in 1945. It was published quickly by the American War Information Office to increase awareness of the atrocities that had occurred. It contains post-liberation photographs at Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, Nordhausen, and Ohrdruf concentration camps and the site of the Gardelagen massacre.

    One two-page undated typed document, entitled "Ist eine Assimilation der Deutschen Juden in Amerika möglich oder wahrscheinlich?" The first three-page typed letter is dated 7 November 1939. The second two-page letter is dated 13 Dec.1939. Both letters were sent from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
