  1. Cigarette card album

    German cigarette album, Deutschland erwacht. This album was probably received as a gift by the donor’s grandfather or great-grandfather who worked with the Frankfurt Zoological Society. All the German captions have been translated into English and pasted into the album.

    The Ike Diamond papers include his 1934 Polish identification card, a 1946 passport entry indicating Diamond could enter Venezuela, and his 1939-1945 diary describing the outbreak of war, his confinement in the Warsaw ghetto, his escape, hiding on a farm in Otrębusy, and liberation. He appears to have begun his diary while in hiding in May 1943, so the descriptions of fall 1939 through summer 1943 are written as chapters in the past tense while entries beginning September 1, 1943 are written as diary entries in the present tense.     Contains letters to Meer Bomash from Russian State Duma members, civil servants, publishers, students, intelligentsia, and ordinary citizens about the establishment of Jewish educational institutions, antisemitism, compulsory military service, and the general conditions of the Jewish community of Łódź.   4. "Max Adler: From Germany to America, 1926-1939"

    Consists of one memoir, 6 pages, entitled "Max Adler: From Germany to America 1926-1939," by Max Adler. In the memoir, Mr. Adler describes the history of his family and the Jewish community in his hometown of Bad Mergentheim, Germany. He describes antisemitism in the 1930s, his memories of Kristallnacht, and leaving on a Kindertransport to the Netherlands in January 1939. Mr. Adler's parents were able to immigrate to the United States in May 1939, and he joined them there in February 1940.

  6. Ukrainian bishops with Nazi officials

    Several Ukrainian bishops cross a courtyard. Once inside they are greeted by the German Nazi official, Waldemar Magunia, who shakes their hands. One of the bishops then reads a statement into a microphone. According to the narrator, their statement affirms their strong opposition to Bolshevism. MCU of one of the bishops and then Magunia.   7. Corpses discovered in Lvov

    Titles on screen: KRIGET I ?STER / Tyska Trupper besätta Lemberg. Triumphal music (no commentary) as the Germans enter Lvov. They are greeted by smiling and waving Polish citizens. Women pose with German soldiers. Title on screen: GPU:s sate i Lemberg The music becomes much darker and we hear the familiar soundtrack of the women crying that is used in the German newsreels about the Lemberg massacre.     March (probably very early after the Anschluss). Single shot of a sign with Chancellor Schuschnigg portrait and "JA" (etched or stencil-painted?) and partially scratched off. All the Staendestaat propaganda was removed (often by forcing Jews) after March 12.

    The Madeline and Sigmund Krauthammer photographs depict Madeline and Sigmund Krauthammer in Körösmező and Beregszász, Hungary (now Yasinia and Berehove, Ukraine) just before the Holocaust in Hungary and on their wedding day in August 1945.

  12. Daily flight between Moscow and Berlin

    An Aeroflot Douglas DC-3 lands at Tempelhof airport in Berlin. The German and Soviet governments have initiated daily flights between Moscow and Berlin. The plane lands on a snow-covered runway. Shot of the Russian writing on the plane's nose and a hammer and sickle graphic on its body. Passengers, including Soviet and German officials, get off the plane and stand on the tarmac.

  14. Hitler Youth at the 1933 Reich Party Day

    Hitler speaks to Hitler Youth at the 1933 Party Day rally at the Nuremberg stadium. He tells them that they are the German future: that they are "of our blood, our flesh, our spirit." CUs of Hitler and handsome Aryan boys while he speaks. Hitler leads the crowd in a chorus of "Heils."

    Title card: "Sonntagschul-Ausflug 1937 / Sonntagschule Dbg. Meiderich Quadtstrasse". Handwritten slate indicating that the film was taken by Fritz Jasper. A group from a "Sunday-school" on Quadtstrasse in Duisburg Meiderich meets at the train station and goes to Bottrop, 25 km NE of Duisburg, for a day of fun.   19. Children play outdoors in prewar Poland

    Forest scene in early autumn. The kids run around. Hanna is carried on both parents' shoulders for a time. They walk along paths in Jaremcze, Thomas is carried too.
