  1. Buchenwald Standort-Kantine concentration camp scrip, 2 Reichsmark

    2 Reichsmark coupon issued at Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. Buchenwald opened on July 19, 1937, and issued undated notes in 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 mark denominations. The simply designed notes were printed on coarse paper. There were two types of coupons: canteen scrip and exchange scrip issued to members of outside labor brigades [Aussenkommandos.] In early April 1945, as US forces approached Buchenwald concentration camp, the German guards began to evacuate the camp.   2. Fruma Broude Gurevich letter

    Consists of a one-page typewritten letter sent by Dr. Fruma Broude (b. 1899, Fruma Broude Gurevich or Gurvich) from Kovno (Kaunas, Lithuania) in which she explains what happened, who was killed, children who were placed in hiding that she was trying to locate, how she survived, and what their needs are. Also includes a blank envelope with the return address for Dr. M.J. Kardon (donor's father) in Philadelphia.

  3. Linen runner belonging to Mirka Hausman

    A linen table runner embroidered with the initials "M.H." that once belonged to the donor’s maternal grandmother, Mirka Hausman (nee Levine), who perished during the Holocaust. The runner was later acquired by the donor's mother, Cila Hausman Knaster (1908-2007), when she revisited her hometown of Jasionówka, Poland after immigrating to the U.S. in 1949.

    The collection contains documents of the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan and medical hospitals, Tashkent Medical Institute, medical reaserch centers and other state medical agencies active on the territory of Uzbekistan during WWII.     Willam Kauder's Royal Air Force (RAF), United Kingdom, flight log, documents, including a Letter of commendation, a photo of a memorial tombstone for his sister, Edith (Edita), her husband, Erich, and their son, Harry, and a photo of three unidentified people, two men and a woman, walking down a street. William (born Vilem) was originally from Prague (now Czech Republic), and escaped while German forces were invading during World War II. His parents, Hugo and Pauline, and sister Edith and her family, were unable to leave. They were deported in 1942 and killed in concentration camps.

  8. Marx family papers

    Comprised of documents, newspaper clippings, and correspondence that illustrate the experiences of Kurt Marx, the donor's father, who fled Frankfurt, Germany in 1938. Correspondence includes letters from Kurt's mother, Amalie, who was unable to leave and did not survive. Also included are documents and correspondence capturing Kurt's efforts to assist Amalie in emigration, but to no avail, in addition to a notebook labeled by Amalie [Marxsohn] and inscribed by Kurt.

  9. Helmut Georg Schreima papers

    Consists of photographs, postcards, and a memoir pertaining to the experiences of Helmut Georg Schreima (1917-1981). Schreima, a Czech-German teenager from Lower Silesia, was arrested as an anti-Nazi teenager on a charge of high treason. Following his release after several years of imprisonment, Schreima later served in the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front and in France. While in France, Schreima defected and joined the French Forces Interior. At the end of the war, Schreima worked with OSS behind the lines and then immigrated to the United States where he pursued a legal career, becoming bot...

  10. Loschner and Klein families collection

    Includes documents that illustrate the experiences of the Loschner and Klein families in Vienna and France during and after the war, including a German passport issued to Ruth Loschner (1924-1942), the donor's maternal aunt, who was deported Pithiviers and then sent to Auschwitz in 1942 where she perished. Also included are the written testimonies of Hedy Loschner Kelin, the donor's mother, from the 1990s, regarding her experiences in hiding in France, and a typewritten transcript of an interview with the donor's father, Emil Klein, for a school project.

    Consists of a letter and its translation written by the donor's grandmother-in-law, Toni (Seckel) Flatow, and her husband, Max Flatow, right before they were both deported to Auschwitz in 1942. The letter was addressed to the donor's wife, Ruth Altman (nee Unger), and her family in the United States after they left Germany in 1938. Also included is a copy of a photograph of young Ruth at the Berlin Zoo.

    Personal files of prisoners of Jewish origin convicted of various crimes, e.g. theft, fraud. In addition, other materials, e.g. lists of prisoners, statistic data. Personal files contain the prisoner's personal data and characteristics, as well as an accusation and official correspondence.

  15. Paulis liberation photographs collection

    Includes photographs taken or inscribed en verso by United States soldier Andrew Paulis of the 628th Medical Clearing Company, one of the first soldiers' units to arrive at Buchenwald Concentration Camp after its liberation on April 11, 1945.

    The collection consists of a handwritten German-language diary, as well as a typed, English-translation and transcription. The original diary was written in Kurrentschrift, type of cursive script, by Ferdinand Lange, a German Jewish refugee in Manila, Philippines, during World War II (1939-1945). The diary discusses everyday life, family members, and attacks on the town and escaping from the resulting fires.
