  1. "Alberto Cernogoraz; 1914-1946: Holocaust Survivor"

    Consists of one memoir, undated, entitled, "Alberto Cernogoraz; 1914-1946: Holocaust Survivor," by Genoveffa Cernogoraz Cook. Mrs. Cook writes about her childhood in pre-war and wartime Italy and her memories of her brother, Alberto, who was arrested in 1943 as a member of the Italian Underground and was presumed dead. After the war, however, the family learned that he had been imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp. Though he recovered from his illnesses, Alberto Cernogoraz was murdered in 1946.

    Consists of two official certificates presented to Max Burin, originally of Recklinghausen, Germany: one is presented in May 1933, by the Preussischer Landes-Krieger Verband; and one one is presented in February 1935, by the Polizei-Prasident der Recklinghausen. The certificates attest to Max Burin's participation as a soldier in World War I. Also includes a certificate presented March 6, 1936 by the Chevra Kadischah of the Recklinghausen Jewish community, wishing Max Burin luck on his upcoming immigration to Palestine and making him, as the fomer chairman of the group, an honorary member. ...

  3. Bulldozers and US Army engineers unearth corpses in the rubble of destroyed buildings

    The NARA record states that this film shows "the rubble of a European town devastated by Germans." Civilians and US Army soldiers (engineers?) watch as a bulldozer clears the rubble from a bombed building. After the bulldozers have moved the large pieces of debris, the soldiers use shovels to continue digging for bodies of those buried in the ruins. Soldiers escort a distraught man away from where they are digging. She finishes answering a question posed by the President, Cerdini, before recounting her deportation to Birkenau and subsequent separation from the children she had accompanied from Izieu. She makes direct reference to Zlatin, the husband of Mme. Sabina Zlatin (maiden name Chwast), whose testimony was on May 27, 1987 (Film ID 3908).     Consists of a book, written and edited by Susanne Sommer, entitled "Letters 1938 to 1945: The Grunwalds' Journey from Oppression to Freedom." The book mainly consists of copies and transcriptions of the correspondence between Max and Marga Grunwald of Berlin, Germany, and Paul and Jean Lewinson, of Arlington, Virginia. The Lewinsons were the American sponsors of the Grunwald family who traveled from Germany to the Philippines where they remained for two years before arriving in the United States in 1941. Also includes copies of correspondence between the Grunwalds and other family members.

  13. "Pilgrimage to Jeleniewo" collection

    Consists of one videocassette, entitled "Pilgrimage to Jeleniewo," which shows the restoration and re-consecration ceremony for the pre-war Jewish cemetery in Jeleniewo, Poland. The cemetery had been desecrated during the Holocaust and was forgotten by the citizens of Jeleniewo. Also includes one booklet entitled, "Żydzi Jeleniewa," which describes the restoration of the cemetery and shows the headstones found in the cemetery.

  14. Uriel Hanoch photograph collection

    The photographs document the experiences of the Hanoch family in Kovno (Kaunas), Lithuania, before World War II and the experiences of Uriel Hanoch and her brother in a displaced persons camp in Germany and Italy after their liberation from concentration camps.

    Consists of one letter, dated March 13,1935, from Julius Levine in Paris to a family member in the United States. In the letter, Levine describes his impressions of Germany, including his feelings of uneasiness there, and his sense that Germany is preparing for war.
