  3. Toiletry kit

    The toiletry kit was given to and/or used by the Strochlitz family in a displaced persons camp in Berlin, Germany. The kit was hand-carried by family members when they emigrated to the United States. The kit contains: a-leather case, b- nail file, c- scissors, d- brush, e- brush with handle and f- soap dish with soap. There are several items missing from the kit.

    Issue of Der Stürmer, a viciously anti-Jewish newspaper published by Julius Streicher, an early Nazi Party member, from 1923-1945 in Germany. The newspaper's slogan was "Die Juden sind unser Unglück!" [The Jews are our misfortune]. The paper thrived on scandal, and preferred sensational stories of Jews committing disgusting, evil acts. It was also infamous for its antisemitic cartoons and staff cartoonist Fips. Streicher was arrested by the US Army in May 1945.     Contains a memoir, 46 pages, entitled "Roman Neuberger: History of a Holocaust Survivor 1941--", by Roman Neuberger. The memoir describes his experiences in pre-war Lvov, in the Warsaw Ghetto, hiding as a Catholic in a Polish orphanage in Turkowice, and, after the war, in the Rothchild Spital displaced persons camp in Vienna. Includes copies of documents and photographs.

    Consists of a handwritten draft of letter on plain paper in graphite, written to Franklin D. Roosevelt by Simon I. Kononvitch (Anna Kfare's brother), in which he asks the President to stop "Hitler's annihilation of the Jewish people of Europe," dated March 1943.

  19. Pre-war Jewish life in a Jewish shtetl

    Amateur footage taken by an American Jew, Joseph Shapiro, during a visit to relatives in Horodok (Gorodok), a Polish shtetl, said to have been located somewhere between Minsk and Vilna. Milk and bagels are distributed to hungry children at an outdoor party. In addition, there are school scenes, market scenes, people going up and down the main street on foot and in horsedrawn wagons, women at work, wooden houses and farm animals.
