  1. Dora Rosenthal memoir

    Consists of one memoir, 6 pages, untitled, by Dora Rosenthal, originally of Czyz̊ewo, Poland. In the memoir, which is separated in two sections, Mrs. Rosenthal recalls her memories of the mass aktion against the Jews of Czyz̊ewo in August 1941 in which most of the Jews, including her parents, were shot. She spent the rest of the war in various hiding places, mostly in the forests.

    Consists of photographic negatives taken of the Ohrdruf concentration camp by James Howard Hartley Blackmore, a professional photographer and member of the 80th infantry division. Photographs mainly depict the bodies of victims.

  5. Beth and Lou Jacoby photograph collection

    Collection consists of four photographs depicting life in the ghetto during the Holocaust. The image of the boy and man fighting over a piece of bread was taken in the Warsaw ghetto. It is believed that the other three images (two of children standing in the street and another of someone laying on the sidewalk) were also taken in the Warsaw ghetto. Lou Jacoby's father's friend Janek Celnick survived the war as a photographer and gave these to the donor's father while they were living in the Neu Freimann DP camp.

  6. Erwin Hirsch and Martel Sommer collection

    Consists of documents, photographs, and a CD of music related to the pre-war, wartime, and post-war experiences of Erwin Hirsch, originally of Strasbourg, France. Includes pre-war photographs of Mr. Hirsch in Mannheim, Germany, and articles and tributes related to his work as a cantor, both in the Mannheim synagogue from 1937 until Kristallnacht, and at Congregation Habonim in New York City from 1940-1983, as well as an audio CD entitled "Erwin Hirsch: A Voice Not Forgotten," of Hirsch's music.   7. Fritz Kauffmann speech

    Consists of the English translation of a 1963 speech, 9 pages, by Fritz Kauffmann, entitled "The Jews in Shanghai during World War II: Memories of a board member of the Jewish Congregation." In the speech, Mr. Kauffmann described his life in Shanghai, where he had lived since 1931, during the war and his activities with the Middle European congregation. He was briefly imprisoned in 1942 by the Japanese in Shanghai.

  8. Dachau war crimes trials photographs

    Consists of 40 photographs taken at the American Military Tribunal in Dachau in November and December 1945 (also known as the Dachau war crimes trials). The photographs are from the first trial, the United States vs. Martin Gottfried Weiss et. al., in which forty defendants were charged in crimes related to the operation of the Dachau concentration camp. Weiss was the commandant of Dachau from 1942-1943.

  9. "The Hill"

    Consists of the English translation of one short story, entitled "The Hill," by Antanas Jonynas, originally written in 1966. This manuscript tells the story of the last hours of a Jewish doctor, Dr. Schmidt, who was killed with his family in the Kupre Forest outside of Kraziai, Lithuania, on August 8, 1941 by the citizens of Kraziai, some of whom were his patients. The doctor had just finished treating a patient, Joseph Martinkus, who later told the story to Mr. Jonynas.   11. Records of the Youth Zionist Organization "Ahva" (Fond 342)

    The collection contains the following types of documents: bylaws, programs, appeals, minutes of the meetings of the Board; correspondence with Zionist organizations in Poland and worldwide; documents related to the activities of the branches of the organization throughout the region (arranged alphabetically by locality); financial activities of the organization; and membership information, including various lists of members, representatives to the meetings, and questionnaires.

  12. Cyrla Kaufman papers

    Papers consists of pre-war images of Cyrla Kaufman's family; post-war images of Cyrla Kaufman and her rescuer Tadeusz Lasica, who helped Cyrla escape the Warsaw ghetto, hid her throughout the war, and later married her; and birth, death, and marriage certificates.

    Consists of one translation, in English, of "To Be an Actress," the memoir of Nava Shean, born Vlasta (Vava) Shan in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In the memoir, Ms. Shean describes her childhood in Tabore, her experiences in Theresienstadt during World War II, and her success as an actress before, during, and after World War II. The memoir has been translated from the original Hebrew by Michelle Fram Cohen.

  14. Selected records from the OSE archives related to Tunisia

    This collection contains records related to the founding, financing, and disbanding of the Tunisian branch of the Oeuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE, Children's Relief Organization). The Tunisian branch was founded in 1947 and ceased activity in 1983.

  15. Werner Lipton collection

    Contains letters written to Werner J. Lipton, originally of Mindelheim, Germany, from his parents, grandparents, and other relatives, between 1941-1943. Mr. Lipton was sent at the age of 11 in 1939, to live with relatives in Switzerland to escape the Nazis, while the rest of his family remained in Mindelheim and ultimately perished in the Holocaust.
