  3. Sign for Dachau concentration camp acquired by a US soldier

    Sign lettered Dachau taken by James Vasilopoulos, a US soldier, upon his arrival at Dachau concentration camp on April 29, 1945, the day of its liberation by American troops. He took the sign from the main gate and detached it by sliding it out of a slot. He and another infantryman were point men for their company and opened one of the gates at Dachau. It was not locked. He said once they were inside the "pandemonium and happiness of the prisoners was beyond description."     Consists of one copy of the September 30, 1943, issue of the "PM Daily" newspaper, containing, among other wartime news, an article entitled "Report Bears German Camp Horrors In Poland" that describes daily life in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

  6. Antonius (Tony) Van Achthoven collection

    Consists of one manuscript, 80 pages (with additional copies and articles), written by Antonius (Tony) VanAchthoven as a series of letters to his grandson, Daniel; as well as letters to a scholar named Kellin. In the letters, Mr. VanAchthoven, who is Catholic, describes his memories of growing up during the occupation of the Netherlands, of witnessing antisemitism, and of his immigration to the United States in 1948. Includes copies of photographs, articles, and related documents.

  7. Yakov and Tosia Klinger collection

    Collection consists of a letter from Yakov and Tosia Klinger in the Warsaw ghetto to Yakov's sister, Rozia Piotrkowski; the letter was written shortly before the Klingers and their young son, Sunio, were deported to Treblinka in 1942, where they were murdered. Also includes an original photographic print of Yakov and original modern writings by Michael Koenig, the nephew (by marriage) of Yakov Klinger.

    This collection contains reports on surveillance by the secret police, Serviciul Special de Informaţii, concerning Romanian Jewish organizations and reports on Jewish leadership, as well as antisemitic organizations and publications, the wartime repression of Jews, and the wartime "aryanization" (confiscation) of Jewish property.

    Contains a memoir, correspondence, and legal documents pertaining to the Holocaust experiences of the Engelmann family. Originally from Berlin, Germany, the family emigrated to Turkey in 1937, where Peter, his Jewish father, Konrad, and Christian mother, Ilse, remained for the entirety of the war. Includes articles and narrations by and about various family members, with a focus on Dr. Susanne Engelmann, the donor's aunt, who wrote "From the Golden Horn to the Golden Gate" about her experiences.

    The Donald Molofsky collection contains mainly correspondence sent from Donald to his parents, from 1947-1948. Molofsky served as an engineer on the SS Exodus, but the correspondence does not contain much information about the voyage itself. The correspondence concerns details from Donald’s time spent on vacation in Haifa, Na'an, and in France. Also included are correspondence from the Molofsky family to Donald, letters from Donald’s friend Zeev “Vivy” Siegel’s parents to the Molofsky family, and various other letters.     Contains records related to the implementation of any-Jewish laws. Includes circulars, reports, correspondence, bank statements and income records of Jewish employees at the bank.

  14. Eric Sommer collection

    Collection consists of two false ID cards issued to Eric Sommer’s parents, David and Hilde Sommer, German Jews who were able to survive the Holocaust in France passing as non-Jews. The cards were issued to "Emile Schwebel" and "Henriette Schwebel" in March 1943 in La Mure and February 1943 in Sainte-Colombe-la-Campagne, France. Also included with the collection is a copy of a handwritten memoir.

    Contains one booklet entitled "The Freeman Legacy: Their Past, His Future, One Survival", by Michelle Freeman. In the paper, she describes the Holocaust experiences of her grandparents, Joseph and Helen Freeman, both originally of Radom, Poland, and their post-war life in the United States. She also profiles her father, Louis Freeman, and his experiences as the child of two Holocaust survivors. Includes photographs of the Freeman family.

  17. Maxine Winn collection

    Contains two copy prints and one copy of a letter written by father's brother-in-law during the war. The donor's father, Nathan Kenig, was in the Kutno ghetto before he escaped and was captured and sent to the Majdanek concentration camp, from which he also escaped. He eventually became head of the Polish division of the Russian army where he remained untill the end of the war.

  18. "My War Years"

    Consists of one memoir, 13 pages, written by Cass Lewart, originally of Łódź, Poland. Mr. Lewart describes his family and life before the war, his memories of the German invasion, during which the family briefly fled to Warsaw before returning to Łódź. After witnessing the German occupation of Łódź, Mr. Lewart's father decided to move the family back to Warsaw, and managed to obtain false Aryan papers for them. The family lived outside the ghetto until they were denounced in the fall of 1942, and briefly imprisoned. Mr. Lewart and his mother were released and established a new false i...

    Consists of one CD-ROM containing the text of a book, 1736 pages, entitled "Ancestors and Descendants," by Leopold Hoenig. The book is subtitled "The Descendants of Related Jewish Families from Bassenheim, Burgbrohl, Euskirchen, Flamersheim, Gappenach, Mertloch, Merzbach, Münstermaifeld, Niederzissen, Ochtendung, Pillig, Polch, Schweinheim, Sinzig, Wierschem, and Neighboring Towns in Germany and in Meerssen, the Netherlands." Includes an extensive family tree of the families and a names index.

  20. Rabbi Jay Stein collection

    Collection consists of 10 liberation photographs from Buchenwald concentration camp in April, 1945, taken or reproduced by the United States Army. Also included is a photograph of Weimar, labeled on reverse as being "Platz Adolf-Hitler." Images include survivors as well as army personnel and barracks and gallows within the camp.
