History

Wartime Slovakia was run by a triumvirate of anti-Semitic leaders who supported most of Nazi Germany’s racial policies. Father Jozef Tiso, a Roman Catholic priest, was the country’s president. Vojtech Tuka, the prime minister and foreign minister, was also head of the Nástupists, the radical wing of the Hlinkova slovenská l’udová strana. Alexander Mach, Slovakia’s propaganda minister, headed the Hlinka garda (Hlinka Guards), the armed Nazi-Fascist wing of the HSLS. This triumvirate gradually transformed Slovakia into a Fascist state.

Contains a memoir entitled "Contribution to the History of Slovakia (The So-called 'Jewish Question' - Partial Autobiography)" relating to the experiences in Slovakia from 1925 to 1947. In the memoir Georg Keleti discusses childhood in Slovakia, local antisemitiesm, the history of the Hlinka Guard, and the Free Slovak Republic. The memoir was written in or after 1991and ends with a note about the author's 1991 visit in Slovakia.

Founded in 1938

Hlinkova Garda was a militia established in Slovakia by the pro-Nazi Hlinkova slovenská l’udová strana (Hlinka Slovak People’s Party) after the Munich Conference of 1938, in which Western leaders allowed Hitler to occupy the Sudeten region of Czechoslovakia. The Hlinkova Garda was named for Andreij Hlinka, a Slovak nationalist who died that same year.
