Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2008 by Gene Selig. This donation supplements and earlier donation made in 1992 by Gene Selig.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a Haggadah, a certificate, and photographs relating to the experiences of Siegfried and Hildegard Selig and their ten year old son Gert (Gene) during the Holocaust when they fled Frankfurt, Germany, and traveled on the trans-Siberian railway through China and Kobe, Japan, arriving in the United States in late 1940.

Haggadah used by Gert Selig as a young boy. Ten year old Gert and his parents Siegfried and Hildegard fled Frankfurt, Germany, in 1940 because of the increasing persecution of Jews by the Nazi government. They traveled via the Trans Siberian railway through China to Kobe, Japan, and reached the United States late that year.
