Biographical History
The Gendarmerie as armed police forces under the command of the Ministry of Defense existed in the Bohemian lands since the time of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. With the founding of Czechoslovakia 1918 the Gendarmerie was subordinated to the Ministry of the Interior and took over the main police duties in the state from local crime investigations until police air patrols against German and Hungarian spy overflights after 1933. The collection consists out of material from three different administrative organisation around the Ministry of Interior (Ministerstvo vnítra) of Czechoslovakia and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia: the General Commander of the Gendarmerie (Generální velitel četnictva) 1918-1942; the General Commander of the uniformed Protectorate Police (Generální velitel uniformované protektorátní policie) 1942-1945 and of the Criminal Headquarter Prague (Kriminální ústředna Praha). The main function of the General Commander of the Gendarmerie was the controll of the discipline of these armed forces.

Scope and Content
The Gendarmerie in the pre-war Czechoslovak Republic was a militarily organized security force, according to the applicable legal requirements and according to the relevant state authorities to maintain public order and security throughout the territory of Czechoslovakia. It was also responsible for the border control and sent illegal emigrants from Nazi-Germany, under them also Jews, back to Germany. After the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, the Gendarmerie became part of the occupation administration. Gendarmes were given functions such as auxiliary police, accompanying transports of Czech and Moravian Jews from different places to the Theresienstadt Ghetto and mainly serving as camp guards and in the prison service.

Biographical History
Po vzniku samostatného československého státu v roce 1918 převzala vláda řadu institucí a organizací zaniklé rakouské monarchie, mezi ně patřil i represivní státní aparát, jehož součástí bylo četnictvo. Postavení četnictva podléhajícího ministerstvu vnitra určil zákon č. 299 Sb. z. a n. ze 14. dubna 1920. Generální velitel četnictva byl zřízen již dekretem Národního výboru ze dne 31. října 1918, jeho hlavním úkolem byl dozor nad kázní, výcvikem a řádnou činností četnictva. Rozsah jeho pravomocí se často měnil a v některých záležitostech se překrýval s činností 13. oddělení ministerstva vnitra, příslušného k řízení četnictva. Výnos říšského protektora o reorganizaci všech složek protektorátní policie a četnictva k 1. 7. 1942 znamenal mj. sloučení V. (policejního) oddělení ministerstva vnitra s Generálním velitelstvím četnictva a vytvoření Úřadu generálního velitele uniformované protektorátní policie (Generalkommandant der uniformierten Protektoratspolizei).
Archival History
Písemnosti generálního velitele četnictva byly po druhé světové válce pravděpodobně spolu s dokumenty generálních velitelů uniformované a neuniformované protektorátní policie shromážděny poválečným Sborem národní bezpečnosti (SNB) a v letech 1955 až 1966 společně předány Státnímu ústředního archivu v Praze (dnes Národnímu archivu).
Scope and Content
Četnictvo v předválečné Československé republice bylo vojensky organizovaným bezpečnostním sborem k udržování veřejného pořádku a bezpečnosti na celém území Československa. Odpovídalo také za kontrolu hranic a odesílalo ilegální emigranty z nacistického Německa, mezi nimi i Židy, zpět do Německa. Po zřízení Protektorátu Čechy a Morava byla četníkům svěřena funkce pomocné policie, mj. doprovázeli transporty českých a moravských Židů z různých míst do terezínského ghetta a vykonávali službu v táborové a vězeňské stráži.

Spisy generálního velitele četnictva byly uspořádány v roce 1972 podle původní spisové manipulace tvořící jednak chronologicko-numerické celky a jednak věcné celky.
