Scope and Content
The (sub)series in this fonds contain several interesting files regarding Belgium. Series 1 contains emigrant case files, arranged by destination country. For Belgium, see folder nrs. 5851-5853; for the former Belgian Congo, see folder nrs. 3087-3092. This series also contains a fairly large number of files entitled “International” and “Miscellaneous international”, which might also contain case files of people migrating to (or from) Belgium. In Series 2 (“AJDC Paris Office Correspondence”) there is a section on Belgium, holding 5 folders. Folder nr. 5988 contains statistical reports (1951-1954) and folder nr. 5989 financial reports (1947-1954), both from the AJDC affiliate in Brussels. In folder nr. 5990 we find miscellaneous correspondence between the AJDC offices in Paris and Brussels (1951-1954), including a report on the situation of Polish Jews in Europe. Furthermore, we note files with correspondence between AJDC offices in Paris and Brussels concerning the reimbursement of expenses for IRO-sponsored emigrants (nr. 5991; 1950-1952) and concerning plans for group emigration financed by the Yeshiva Kehillat Jacob in Antwerp (nr. 5992; 1950-1953). Several series of subject and country files (Series 3, 6 and 8), arranged alphabetically, contain relevant material on Belgium: “Belgium” (nr. 6257), the case file of G. Hirschova (nr. 6289), “Belgium, Bruxelles” (nr. 6458; 1948-1949), “[Belgium], Antwerp” (nr. 6459; 1948-1949), “[Antwerp] Correspondence regarding an order of dehydrated vegetables for Belgium” (nr. 6551; 1948), “[Brussels] Administrative memo on the sending of registered mail” (nr. 6570; 1949), “[Brussels] Cable from a Mr. Baratz with hotel address” (nr. 6571; 1948), “[Brussels] A six months’ and a quarterly activity report for Belgium and Luxembourg” (nr. 6572; 1948) and “[Brussels] Lists of IRO-sponsored emigrants from Belgium” (nr. 6573; 1949-1950). Lastly, Series 10 (“AJDC Emigration service miscellaneous correspondence”) contains monthly activity reports, sent to the Paris office from the Brussels AJDC Office. The reports include lists of emigrants from Belgium. See nr. 6790 (1946-1948).
