Biographical History

OSE is a nongovernmental welfare organisation, operating worldwide. It was founded in czarist Russia in 1912 and soon expanded to Eastern and Western Europe. After the Second World War, OSE diverted its focus to the Jewish communities in North Africa, Latin America and Israel. The organisation remained active in providing relief in devastated Europe. Historically, the main goal of OSE was to prevent or cure diseases among Jewish people, especially children; the organisation maintained for this purpose a network of medical institutions. Today, OSE specializes through various programs in public health and childcare among Jews. The organisation has consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation.
