Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by Ewa Dziegielewska on behalf of Estera Horn in 2002.

Scope and Content

Consists of seven original photographs of Estera Horn and her maternal relatives before the war in Chelm, Kamien, and Krocyn, Poland, and in Palestine during the war; and two gold-colored metal buttons taken from the donor's coat by her rescuer, Leokadia Wojtkiewicz.

The collection documents the Holocaust-era experiences of Estera Horn, originally of Chelm, Poland, who survived World War II as a hidden child. Photographs consist of pre-war and wartime depictions of Estera and various family members including members of the Lindenbaum, Rosenman, and Justman families, her maternal uncles Mendel and Israel LIndenbaum, Sara Lindenbaum, Gitl Rosenman, and relatives in Palestine.

The buttons were originally attached to Estera Horn's coat. Leokadia Wojtkiewicz, one of Estera's rescuers, removed the buttons while explaining to Estera that she had to do so for safety reasons because "all Jewish children have buttons like these."
