M.52.DAZpO - Documentation of the State Archives of the Zaporozhye Region History of the Archives: Concentration of the archival documentation in the Zaporozhye area began in 1925, and in the same year the regional archival authority was also established. With the cancellation of the sub-sections system in Soviet Ukraine in 1930, the State Historical Archives were established in the area, which were subordinate to the regional archival authority in Dnipropetrovsk. With the creation of the Zaporozhye region in 1939, its historical archives changed its name to the Regional State Historical Archives of Zaporozhye, with its branch in Melitopol. Afterwards the Archives again changed its name in 1941, to the State Archive of the Zaporozhye Region. Due to World War II, many of the Archives' collections were damaged or did not survive. Following the liberation of the area the Archive returned to its work. The Archives' name was changed in 1958 to the State Regional Archive of Zaporozhye. Its branch in Melitopol was closed in 1974 and the documentation was transferred from there to the regional Archives. In 1980 the Archives' name was changed to the State Archives of the Zaporozhye Region. The documentation from the Nazi occupation period during 1941-1944 expresses itself in this Archives by means of documents of the occupation authorities, including documents of the Stadtkommissariat, the municipality, regional and rural councils, factories, agricultural companies and farms. Some of the documentation was transferred to the Archives of the Security Services Office of Ukraine. In this Sub-Record Group, there is only documentation of the Soviet Extraordinary State Commission. The Sub-Record Group includes a survey report and documentation of the Soviet Extraordinary State Commission in Zaporozhye and its region regarding the murder of Jews and POWs during the German occupation period: A. Survey report: Information assembled regarding the number of civilians and POWs murdered in the region during 04 October 1941-14 October 1943; details regarding the fate of the Jews of the city of Zaporozhye, according to testimonies of residents of the city of Zaporozhye, including survivors; methods of murder and the murder sites; names of Nazi war criminals and collaborators, and individual names of people who perished; B. Exhumation reports regarding mass graves near the city; C. Documentation regarding the murder of an elderly Jew by Ukrainian policemen.
