This sub-series holds the documents of the Jewish Council’s Social Department pertaining to its aid and relief work. The records include: notes, reports, financial documents as well as lists of employees and lists of institutions supervised and supplied by the Social Department (orphanages, soup kitchens, etc.); correspondence of the Department with various departments and organizations of the Jewish Council; reports on the relief activity of the Department in the so-called yellow star houses. This body of documents contains the records of the Housing Office of the Jewish Council. They regard predominantly the concentration of Budapest Jews into so-called yellow-star houses in June 1944.The material also holds correspondence between the Housing Office and various other departments of the Jewish Council. The sub-series is a collection of registry sheets created by the Jewish Council regarding the fate of the Jewish communities in the countryside in the spring and summer of 1944. News regarding the ghettoization and deportation in the countryside reached the Council on various channels and many of these pieces of information were recorded on the registry card of the given community or locality. In April 1944, the German authorities ordered the Jewish Council to compile a database on the Hungarian Jewish organizational structure containing the most important information of each community. The Council sent out questionnaires that included a wide array of queries regarding the denominational affiliation, leadership (president and rabbi), number of members (total and taxpaying), organizations and associations of the communities as well as their assets, property, yearly income and expenses. The collection includes more than 700 questionnaires sent back to the Council.
