History
The National Bank of Greece Historical Archive was established for the purpose of preserving and displaying archival material of the National Bank of Greece deemed to be of historical importance. NBG has demonstrated particular concern for its archival material since its early days. Consequently, NBG possesses a comprehensive historical archive whose time span coincides practically with the history of the modern Greek state. The importance of this archival material lies in the fact that NBG, the oldest credit institution in the country, has played a defining role in the Greek economy. Most of the key moments in the nation's economic history, as well as important events in the political, cultural, and social history of the country, are reflected in the NBG's archival material.
Building(s)
The Historical Archive has undergone impressive upgrading in the early years of the twenty-first century. It was relocated to the renovated building on Tritis Septemvriou Street, the first purpose-built archive building in Greece. The original building was constructed in 1926; until 2000 it housed the bank’ s general records. From September 2000 until September 2001 the building underwent extensive restoration and alteration, transforming it into a state-of-the-art archive home. The Historical Archive unit was upgraded into an independent sub-division, reporting directly to the management.
Archival and Other Holdings
The material held in the NBG Historical Archive covers the bank’s history from 1841 to 1966; it also contains originals or copies of various archives of other institutions or individuals entrusted to its safekeeping. The Historical Archive is also responsible for the safekeeping and presentation of all historical collections of the NBG, excepting of the art collection. Today, the NBG Historical Archive is an independent sub-division of NBG. It plays a leading role in the implementation of new technologies for the management of archival material.
