History

The Ostrava City Archives were founded in 1923.

The Ostrava City Archives are a department of the Municipality Ostrava.

Archival and Other Holdings

The Ostrava City Archives hold 6,491 linear meters of archival materia dating from 1362 to 2018. As of 31 December 2018, there were a total of 1,519 archival fonds and collections, of which 626 have been processed (including inventories).

The archives contain documents of the institutions and national authorities operating at the level of the city and district of Ostrava, or in municipalities that today form part of the city (municipal authorities, national committees, district office), judicial authorities (district court, municipal prosecutor's office), documents of school and health facilities operating in the city, associations, church administration (parish offices of individual municipalities), personal fonds of prominent personalities of the region, etc.

Of particular interest are the fonds: Magistrát města Moravská Ostrava (1941 - 1945), which contains informations about the deportation of Jews from Ostrava who were deported in autumn 1939 to Nisko or to Theresienstadt between 1941 and 1943. This fond also contains material about the aryanisation of Jewish property. The fond NSDAP, okresní vedení Moravská Ostrava (1939 - 1945) (Kreisleitung der Nazional-sozialistischen deutschen Arbeiterpartei in Mährisch Ostrau 1939 - 1945) contains questionnaires about Jewish occupations.

Conditions of Access

Five pieces of archival material can be ordered at once and will be available in the reading room after 2 hours. Archival material can be ordered on the basis of finding aids after registration in advance online. More material can only be ordered for the next day.

Research Services

Research services are offered by the Ostrava City Archives.

Reproduction Services

If the condition of the archive materials permits, it is possible to make reproductions from the archive materials for a fee. The Archives' staff can make black-and-white photocopies up to A3 format for the needs of researchers or it can scan archival materials up to A3 format (color). The researcher can, after prior arrangement with the service in the research room, also make reproductions of his own digital camera without the use of flash.
