Archival and Other Holdings

The City Archives of Liege hold all documents produced by the various departments of the municipal administration in the performance of their tasks. It also holds private archives, which it receives from individuals, associations, or businesses as donations, deposits, or legacies. The consultation of these private archives can provide a different perspective and sometimes fills existing gaps in official documentation.

In the City Archives’ historic fonds (fonds historiques), researchers can find, inter alia, documentation related to the world wars; the expositions universelles that were held in Liège in 1905, 1930 and 1939; demonstrations and public order (until 1914); protocol (e.g. receptions organised by municipal authorities and external relations); the complete collection of the administrative Bulletin of the city (from 1836 to 1987).

The City Archives also have:

  • a library, which is mainly focused on the history of Liège, regional monographs, management and administrative law

  • a large collection of maps, plans and posters
