Abstract

Videotape testimony of Michèle G., who was born in Domfront, France in 1939, the youngest of three children. She recounts that her family lived in Paris; her father's military draft prior to her birth; her family traveling to Domfront, thinking war was imminent, thus her birth there; their return to Paris; learning her father was a prisoner of war; his return in 1941; evacuation with her siblings by the Croix-Rouge française in March 1942; staying with family friends, then placement with a Catholic family with seven children in Isserpent; her brother's placement elsewhere that summer; full integration into family life, including farm tasks and attending Sunday mass; their return to their parents in Lyon a year later, then back to Isserpent in spring 1943; placement in a children's home in Montmorency in 1945 after the war; her mother retrieving them; living with her in Montfaucon and with an aunt and cousin; and hoping for years for her father's return. Ms. G. discusses the children's home; recently contacting officials in Isserpent and Montfaucon, who verified her residence there for claims purposes; visiting the family in Isserpent (they recognized her immediately); documenting her father's deportation and death; and attending the war crimes trial of Klaus Barbie. She shows documents and photographs.
