Nathan L. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Nathan L., who was born in Łańcut, Poland in 1934, the younger of two brothers. He recounts living in bunkers in the woods with his family, including grandparents, aunts, and uncles; often running and hiding in cemeteries; his uncle carrying him when he could not run through high snow; assistance from some non-Jews; his grandparents giving up; his mother not returning when she went for food (he never saw her again); liberation six month later; returning to Łańcut; living with his aunt, then in an orphanage for a few months; living in Rzeszów with his brother, father, aunt, and her fiance; a Soviet soldier protecting them from Polish antisemitic violence; a three-month journey to Italy; living in displaced persons camps in Cremona and Naples; his bar mitzvah in Cremona; emigrating in 1949 to join relatives in the United States; continuing his education; and serving in the United States military. Mr. L. notes considering his childhood normal at the time, since it was his only experience; his father and brother never discussing their experiences; not considering himself a survivor since he had not been in a concentration camp; and attending the Hidden Child conference in 1991.
