Eva M. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Eva M., a twin, who was born in Paris, France in 1925. She recalls her father's death in 1934; an older sister's death in 1937; hiding in Vire and La Souterraine after German occupation; her mother's illness and death; traveling to Cher with her older sister; a non-Jewish woman hiding them in her country home; moving to Maine-et-Loire when the owner's daughter moved in; betrayal and arrest; becoming friends with a fellow prisoner; their transfer to Drancy (her aunt and cousin helped her there), then Birkenau; grouping themselves with other French women; always helping each other; slave labor; her friend's death; becoming close with another woman; hospitalization for typhus; being saved by a Hungarian prisoner doctor; her friend giving her extra bread she had stolen; occasional assignments to Canada Kommando; observing lines of people waiting to be killed; the death march in January 1945; train transport to Dora, then Ravensbru?ck; escaping a death march with assistance from a guard; being fed by nearby French prisoners; returning to Paris; recuperating with her friend in Divonne-les-Bains; her friend's marriage to her twin brother; hers to a POW; and always remaining close.
