Al B. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Al B., who was born in Proszowice, Poland in 1918. He describes a pleasant life in Proszowice; working in a textile factory in ?o?dz?; visiting his parents in September 1939; an unsuccessful escape attempt with his father after the outbreak of war; later fleeing to Lemberg (L'viv); brief arrest by the Soviets in Przemys?l while smuggling themselves back; returning to Proszowice in 1941; forced labor in the Krako?w ghetto in 1942; his parents and brother joining him; hiding with his family on a nearby farm; returning to the ghetto; his family's deportation during the ghetto's liquidation; cleaning streets after mass killings; building barracks and roads in P?aszo?w; working in Schindler's factory; and deportation to Mauthausen in 1944. Mr. B. relates working in a factory in Graz; liberation from Gusen by United States troops; walking with his friends to Linz; briefly returning to Poland; leaving due to antisemitism; reunion with his brother in Terezi?n; traveling with his brother to Linz; and emigration from Germany to the United States in 1948. Mr. B. discusses the complex relations of people from different countries in concentration camps and adjusting to life in the United States.
