Pepo S. Holocaust testimony

Videotape testimony of Pepo S., who was born in Thessalonike?, Greece in 1916, one of six children. He recalls attending French and Jewish schools; participation in Maccabi; his father's death in 1931; leaving school to work in the family business; German invasion; his brother's military service and resulting combat injury; working for the Jewish council; helping Jews escape; distributing food from the Red Cross in the Baron Hirsch quarter; observing abuses by the Jewish police, including Vital Hasson and Edgar Chounio; deportation to Birkenau; slave labor with one brother; witnessing his murder; receiving a note from his sister describing losing hope after surgery in a pseudo-medical experimentation block; giving Hebrew lessons to a prisoner official who prevented his transfer to the experimentation block; transfer to Warsaw; assignment to the kitchen; a death march to Dachau; transfer to another camp; slave labor in a factory; liberation from a transport by United States troops on April 28, 1945; marriage in Thessalonike? in 1946; and the births of three children. Mr. S. notes he is the sole survivor of his immediate and extended family and sings a song from the Salonika ghetto as well a wedding hymn.
