Abstract

Videotape testimony of Rosette G., who was born in Paris, France in 1938. She remembers living in a non-Jewish neighborhood; her father's military service; being in a basement during an air raid; being sent to live on a farm with non-Jews in Vaulandry; nightly visits from her father who worked in a nearby labor camp; his failure to visit one night (she never saw him again); her mother's visit (she remained in Paris); hiding during German searches; reunion with her mother after the war; their return to Paris; placement in a Jewish children's home in Barbizon; learning Jewish customs and religious practices; living in a children's pension in Brittany; attending school in Le Val-Andre?; emigration to the United States in 1949; reunion with her mother in 1950; marriage; and her children's births. Mrs. G. reads letters from her father and describes learning about his deportation and death. She discusses visiting Langenstein, the German camp where he died; saying Kaddish there; reluctance to talk about her experiences; how this changed after participating in the Hidden Child organization; continuing contact with the family that hid her; the importance of her own family; and her lost childhood.
