Abstract

Videotape testimony of Clara C., who was born in Stryi?, Poland (presently Ukraine) in 1922. She recalls non-Jewish friends; studying in Krako?w in 1936; becoming engaged; Soviet occupation; traveling with false papers to her fiance?'s parents' in Nowy Targ via Tarno?w; staying with her fiance?'s sister; narrowly avoiding arrest (her brother-in-law and a woman were killed by Germans); briefly staying in Wis?nicz and Krako?w; moving to the Bochnia ghetto in 1941; arrest while attempting to escape; bribery which resulted in her release; traveling to Krako?w as a non-Jew; smuggling herself into Slovakia; reunion with her fiance? in Kez?marok; marriage in July 1943 in Bratislava; her husband's rescue of many Jewish children; hiding separately from her husband with a woman who knew she was Jewish; liberation by Soviet troops in April 1945; reunion with her husband (neither her parents nor four brothers survived); and emigration to the United States in 1948. Mrs. C. discusses her son's interest in the Holocaust and in her experiences in particular; her and her husband's reluctance to discuss their experiences; and recent willingness of others to talk about the Holocaust.
