Arnold L. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Arnold L., who was born in Polzin, Germany (presently Po?czyn-Zdro?j, Poland) in 1919. He recalls attending public school; expulsion in 1935 due to antisemitism; attending a Zionist agricultural school near Berlin with his brother; visiting his parents in Berlin, where they had been forced to move after confiscation of their assets; moving to a kibbutz in Hessen in 1937, then to another in Gru?sen; emigration in 1938 to a town outside Amsterdam in order to leave for Palestine; illegally traveling by ship to Palestine with 1500 other people in 1939 (his brother had emigrated in 1938); living on kibbutzim; the outbreak of war; joining the British Army; serving with the Jewish brigade in Egypt and Italy; accompanying German prisoners from Italy to Innsbruck; assisting survivors in Eindhoven, Holland to emigrate illegally to Palestine; meeting his wife in Brussels; returning to Palestine in 1946; working as a baker during the Israel-Arab War; and emigrating to the United States in 1957. Mr. L. discusses the deportation and deaths of his parents; ignorance of the Holocaust until after the war; and hardships in Israel during the Israel-Arab War.
