Eric C. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Eric C., who was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1938. He recounts having few prewar memories; reconstructing his story (deportation to Gurs in 1940 with his parents and younger sister, being smuggled out by the French underground, living in the basement of a Christian family - his sister was elsewhere - for eighteen months); placement in an orphanage in Livry-Gagnan in 1944; being introduced to his sister; their transfers to other orphanages, ending in Paris; his father finding them in 1946 (he survived Auschwitz - his mother did not); living with their father in Germany; harsh treatment by his father and the housekeeper; his father's remarriage; being sent to their maternal grandmother in Colorado in 1950; abusive treatment by his grandmother; three wonderful years living in the National Home for Jewish Children (later the Children's Asthma Research Institute); a supportive relationship with the administrator; college graduation; marriage; the births of two children; divorce; remarriage and the birth of a third child. Mr. C. discusses visiting his father in Germany in 1971 after twenty years of no contact; psychological scars from his experiences; unsuccessfully seeking his French rescuers; attending the Hidden Child conference; and sharing his experiences with his children.
