Bernice S. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Bernice S. who was born in Bia?ystok, Poland in 1923. She recalls her traditional orthodox family; Russian occupation; her father losing his job; her brother's arrest and exile to Siberia; German invasion; ghettoization; working outside the ghetto for a German who protected her (he was honored as a "Righteous among the Nations" by Yad Vashem); formation of an underground; and deportation to Majdanek, then Bliz?yn. Mrs. S. decribes transfer to Auschwitz; the death march to P?aszo?w, Gross Rosen and Ravensbru?ck in 1945; release of the prisoners; wandering through German villages; receiving assistance from Soviet soldiers; returning to Bia?ystok; marriage in 1946; leaving Poland ; living in a displaced persons camp until 1949; and emigrating to the United States.
