Paul C. Holocaust testimony
Abstract
Videotape testimony of Paul C., who was born in Cze?stochowa, Poland in 1917 and raised in K?obuck. He discusses prewar antisemitism; participating in Zionist activites; increasing antisemitism resulting in the decline of his parents' business; German occupation; forced labor as a painter, which gave him special privileges; ghettoization; his marriage in 1941; deportations, including his father and niece; and transport to Blechhammer with his wife. Mr. C. recounts changing names with a friend so he could remain near his wife; experiences in Gra?ditz and Reichenbach; working while one person recited the Yom Kippur prayers; assistance from people living near one camp; passing messages between camps; and liberation by Soviets troops in May 1945. He recounts his brief return to Poland; emigrating to Germany; accompanying a children's transport to Israel and returning to Germany; and emigration to the United States in 1949.
