Acquisition

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collection, Gift of Pierre E. Chanover

Pierre Chanover donated the material to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1996. An accretion of one document was donated by Dr. Chanover to the Museum in 2016.

Scope and Content

The postcard was sent by the donor's grandparents in Makow Mazowiecki (Mackheim), Poland, to the donor's parents in Paris, France. Card: created by Pierre Chanover for his mother Helene for Mother’s Day; handwritten messages on cover, interior, and verso with drawings of flowers, labels, and a black and white photo of Pierre adhered inside; dated 1945; in French. Card was made while Pierre was living in a home run by Oeuvres de Secours aux Enfants for the rehabilitation and education of Jewish children. The organizers felt the children should make these cards, and although Pierre had already been reunited with his mother, most of the other children at the home did not yet know if their mothers had survived.
