Acquisition

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collection, Gift of Jan T. Gross

Donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2012 by Professor Jan Gross.

Scope and Content

Contains an identification card (“Kennkarte”) issued under the name Władysław Zawistowski, the false name of Zygmunt Gross (donor’s father), procured by the Polish Socialist Party (PPS) in Warsaw in July 1943; Mr. Gross was a lawyer and an activist with the Party. Also includes a partial identification card (“Kennkarte”) issued in Krakow in May 1942, perhaps a false document as well, but signed (perhaps accidentally) by Mr. Gross with his real name. Zygmunt Gross survived in hiding in the Zoliborz district of Warsaw, protected by the underground Socialist Party.
