Biographical History

Zbigniew Pankowicz was a former member of the Polish Home Army. He lived under the pseudonym Czortwan, Szostak, Korwin, survivor of Auschwitz, No. 152895, and of Buchenwald No. 34253. After World War II, he immigrated to the United States and worked as a computer scientist at the Air Development Center at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, NY.

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Acquisition

Materials were found in Zbigniew Pankowicz's apartment after his death in August 1986. They were donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1990 by Emlyn Griffith, Executor for the Estate of Zbigniew Pankowicz.

Scope and Content

Documents regarding Zbigniew Pankowicz's release from Buchenwald and resettlement in the United States. Includes identification cards, letters of recommendation, correspondence, United States naturalization certificate, and Honorable Discharge from the United States Armed Forces. Includes an album signed by inmates of Buchenwald concentration camp at the time of liberation.
