Biographical History

Donald Norton Pitts was born on 22 January 1927 in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from high school in 1944, and after two semesters at UCLA, he served in the United States Navy from 1945-1946. received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Pomona College in 1949 and then entered the State Department internship program. He joined the Foreign Service in February 1950, and his first post was at the embassy in Warsaw, Poland where he managed business operations related to the embassy.

Archival History

The bowl was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2019 by Julie Pitts, the daughter of Donald Norton Pitts.

Scope and Content

Metal bowl incorporating a Polish coin. The coin is dated 1930 and is for 5 Polish Zlotych. The other side of the coin has the dates 1830-1930. The bowl is part of a collection documenting the experiences of Donald Norton Pitts while he was working for the State Department, c. 1950.
