Biographical History

The Katz Ehrenthal Collection is a collection of more than 900 objects depicting Jews and antisemitic and anti-Jewish propaganda from the medieval to the modern era, in Europe, Russia, and the United States. The collection was amassed by Peter Ehrenthal, a Romanian Holocaust survivor, to document the pervasive history of anti-Jewish hatred in Western art, politics and popular culture. It includes crude folk art as well as pieces created by Europe's finest craftsmen, prints and periodical illustrations, posters, paintings, decorative art, and toys and everyday household items decorated with depictions of stereotypical Jewish figures.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Double sided illustration cut from a German article about the history of people living in the Caucasus written in Fraktur font. Centered on one side, framed by text columns, there is a black ink drawing depicting 3 bearded Jewish men with sidelocks standing face to face talking. They have stereotypically large noses and thick eyebrows and wear top hats with long coats. One man is centered behind the others, who are partially turned towards him. His right hand rests on his chin and he looks at the man on the left, who is speaking with his arms out. The man on the right looks at them and gestures. The title is printed below the image. On the back, there is a black ink drawing depicting the bust of an older man in quarter left profile with text columns below and to the right. He wears a yarmulke and has stereotypical Jewish features: thick eyebrows, hooded eyes, a big nose, sidelocks, and a beard. The title is printed below the image.
