Biographical History
Idel Wahstain was a resident of Iasi, Romania, in 1941. He had two children, Iosef and Rasela. In June of 1941, the Romanian military government initiated a pogrom against the Jews of Iasi. Wahstain was murdered during this massacre on June 29, 1941.

The ceiling lamp globe was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2005 by Pincu Kaiserman for the Federation of Romanian Jewish Communities, Iași Section.

Scope and Content
Glass globe dedicated to the memory of Idel Wahstain, who was murdered in the 1941 pogrom in Iasi, Romania. It was created immediately following World War II and donated by his children, Rasela and Iosef, to the synagogue in Iasi. The globe was retrieved from a light fixture in the main synagogue by the Federation of Romanian Jewish Communities toward the end of the 20th century. In 1940, Romania came under the rule of a radical military coalition led by General Antonescu. In November 1940, they joined the Axis alliance, of which Nazi Germany was the leading member. The Romanians joined in the German attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941. A few days later, Romanian authorities launched a massive pogrom against the Jewish population in Iasi, the regional capital of Moldavia, killing at least 4000 and deporting 1000s more.
