Scope and Content

Pro-Hitler propaganda postcard for the plebiscite, or popular vote, held in Austria on April 10, 1938, to approve, after the act, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany on March 13. It features a pencilled portrait of Adolf Hitler, a hand offering the Heil Hitler salute, and the slogan "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer!" [One People, One Country, One Leader!] There is a commemorative stamp on the back that was issued on April 8, 1938, in honor of the annexation of Austria. The Anschluss [union] was approved by 99.75% of the population. Jews and Roma had lost the right to vote before the election.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Rectangular paper postcard with a vertical black and white graphic design on the front featuring a detailed, realistic pencilled portrait bust of Adolf Hitler. He is turned slightly to the right; his dark hair is neatly parted and he gazes straight ahead. The figure is superimposed over a map of Germany and Austria. Rising and pointing toward Hitler from the lower right corner is a large pencilled hand from the wrist up, finger's extended in a Heil Hitler salute. Superimposed over the image in the lower quarter of the card are 2 lines in stylized German Gothic font. On the reverse in the upper right corner is a green Deutches Reich 6 pence postage stamp with an image of 2 men carrying a large flag with a swastika. A large cancellation stamp covers the left corner. Below the stamp are several blank dotted lines for addresses. A vertical line with adjacent German text divides the card into two equal sections.
