Acquisition
Mr. Scott Sherman donated these photographs to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on Apr. 9, 2004. His father, Rabbi Jerome Sherman, received them from a student in a class on Judaica at Rice University in the 1970s. The collection is donated in loving memory of Rabbi Jerome Sherman.
Scope and Content
Consists of 58 photographs taken upon the liberation of various concentration camps (including Dachau, Buchenwald, Nordhausen, Kaufering IV, Dora-Mittelbau, Bergen-Belsen, and photographs of the Gardelegen massacre). Also includes wartime photographs of mass arrests of Jews in Amsterdam and photographs taken upon the liberation of that city as well as photographs taken after a massacre of Belgian civilians by the Nazis in 1945. The photographs have been thoroughly described on cards which have been fixed to the back of each photograph. The photographs have been approved by SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Forces) censors.
