Pia-Kristina Garde collection

Consists of forms, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs collected by Pia-Kristina Garde [donor] from Holocaust survivors who had been evacuated to Sweden after liberation. Inspired by the 1945 book "De dödsdömda vittna" ("Those Who Were Sentenced to Death Witness), which was based on questionnaires given to the survivors, the donor searched for these survivors to find out what happened to them later in life. The collection consists of her research files (including correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs she received from survivors) as well as copies of the original questionnaires, now deposited at Uppsala University. The donor has written a book, "Those Who Were Sentenced to Death Witness--60 Years Later" (2004) based on her, sometimes long, relationship with these survivors. The book was later revised and published as "Mina föräldrars kärlek" (The Love of My Parents) in 2008. This collection is a resource for researchers studying individual survivors or the memory of Holocaust experiences. As the collection includes questionnaires answered by survivors in 1945-1946 as well as identical questions posed in the 1990s and 2000s, a researcher has access to a direct comparison between immediate and long-term memory of a survivor’s experiences. The majority of the files are housed generally in alphabetical order, with the married names of female survivors included in parentheticals. The files of a group of French women who worked for the Resistance and survived together are housed separately, as are the files of survivors of Kalevi Liiva in Estonia. Some files contain original and copies of photographs, as well as original documents set by the survivors to Pia, as well as extensive personal correspondence with her.

The collection is arranged in six series: Series 1: Planning the project, 1983-2006; Series 2: Individual Files, General, 1940-2014; Series 3: French women in the Resistance; Series 4: Individual files: Kalevi Liiva (Transport B. 1.9.1942), 1993-2011; Series 5: Subject Files, 1983-2006; Series 6: Unsuccessful attempts at contact, 1985-1995.
