Biographical History
Walter Stras (b. Walter Straass, 1924, Steinbach am Glan, Germany - 1995, Kansas City,Mo.) survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. He married a fellow survivor, Malvina, in Germany after their liberation. The couple emigrated to the United States in 1948.

Acquisition
Walter Stras collected the materials during his time in Germany. Stras' son, Stephen Stras, acquired the collection after his father's death in 1995 and added the photocopies of newspaper clippings from 1994 and 1995. Stephen Stras donated the materials to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Oct. 1996.
Scope and Content
Consists of a report from the Bürgermeister in Brücken, Germany, concerning the Jews in the town in 1938; letters from Hilda and Simon Straass, Walter Stras' parents, in Gurs concentration camp; a propaganda leaflet entitled "Kraft durch Fruede!"; a letter of identification for Walter Stras written by H. E. Wortsmith of the 6th U.S. Armored Division; copyprints of photographs depicting scenes of Brücken and Steinbach am Glan, Germany; Walter Stras' Ausweis (identification card) from Buchenwald concentration camp; a letter from Lotie Marcus of United Jewish Social Services concerning Walter Stras' sister, Mildred Straass; a letter of congratulation to Walter Stras from Dan Glickman, member of Congress; and photocopies of newspaper clippings relating to Walter Stras' life in Kansas City, Mo., and his death in 1995.
