Acquisition
The papers in this collection were received or created by Robert Stern and apparently passed down through the family to the donor, who is the son of Robert Stern's brother. The donor entrusted them to Joan Ringelheim of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Aug. 1992. Dr. Ringelheim turned them over to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Collections department that same month, and that department in turn transferred them to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives in Sept. 1992.
Scope and Content
Relates to the fate of Ilse Stern Salinger, who was incarcerated in Westerbork and later perished at Auschwitz along with her husband and child. Also relates to cooperative efforts by Mrs. Salinger's father, Robert Stern, and her mother-in-law, Clara Alice Steinhaus, to obtain restitution from the West German government for damages (e.g. loss of freedom, loss of property) to Ilse Salinger.
