Biographical History

Hildegard Schwarz, nee Krakowiak, was born in Berlin on July 20, 1909. She completed studies at the Bonn University Dental School in 1936, and immigrated to Shanghai, China, in 1938, where she practiced dentistry. In Shanghai, she met and married Austrian emigre Egon Schwarz. Both were interned by the Japanese during the occupation of Shanghai (ca. 1941-1945), and left China following liberation in 1945, settling in the Jewish emigre community of Sosua, in the Dominican Republic, in 1947. They had one daughter, Sylvia, and became citizens of the Dominican Republic in 1953. Hildegard Schwarz died in Sosua on October 4, 1977.
