Scope and Content
Cast concrete rosette from the portico ceiling of the 1912 Hauptsynagoge [Main Synagogue] of Mainz, Germany. The synagogue was desecrated and burned during the Kristallnacht pogrom on November 9-10, 1938. The remains of the synagogue were demolished with explosives a few days later. A customs office was built on the site. In 1988, during renovation of the government building, remnants of the synagogue portico were discovered.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Gray, cast concrete square block with a relief rosette motif. The center disc is smooth and raised above the surface. It is bordered by a raised circle with short, vertical lines, then a circle with concentric lines, that is surrounded by an alternating pattern of arch-shaped leaves and vines. Thetriangular corners are recessed.
