Biographical History
Dorit Whiteman was born in Vienna, Austria to a Jewish family. Her father was a physician. Her mother had a doctorate in chemistry, was an accomplished pianist, and proprietor of a renowned girls' boarding school. In 1938 her family escaped to England, where her mother sustained the family by working as a maid. Dorit attended boarding school in Kent but was evacuated at the outbreak of war to the countryside, where she lived in a bricklayer's primitive house. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 1941. Dr. Whiteman earned a BA from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at New York University.
