Scope and Content
667 J (01:00:12): At the "Comite Francais d'Assistance aux Refugees," branch of the American Joint Distribution Committee in Paris. The Committee provides legal and juridicial advice, to help the refugees stay in France and prepare their definitive settlement in some country. LS, relief (money) provided to Austrian refugee. CU, refugee signing receipt. LS, crowd refugees waiting in line. LS, refugees waiting in the lobby of the "Comite d'Assistance," and showing papers to officials of the Committee. MS, table where refugees show their identification papers to employee. Same, another angle. LS, meeting of the Committee's Council: from left to right, Colonel Durieux, former commanding officer of the Republican Guard; Albert Levy, President of the Committee; Gaston Kahn, managing director of the Committee; Raymond Raoul Lambert, Secretary General. The council discusses the problem of Jewish settlement in the world, over a map/spreadsheet, smoking. Woman bringing files. 667 M (01:01:59): EXT, German refugees entering and leaving the Amsterdam headquarters of the Refugee/Relief Commission. INT, men at table eating. MS, employees at desks (including Miss Pereira, Secretary of the Committee) processing refugees, orderly. 667 N (01:05:47): Scenes in the Dutch Israelite Hospital in Amsterdam. According to NARA documentation, "the patients in this ward are all victims of Nazi brutality." Patients in the ward, nurse tending to the sick. Stone masonry carving "Nederlandsch Israelitisch Armbestoor, Zeikenhuis" (Dutch Jewish Hospital). 667 O (01:06:51): Nieuwesluis Jewish Settlement Camp near Zuider Zee, Holland. Jews are sent here to learn carpentry, cabinet making, and farming to equip them for life in Palestine. Most of these Jews were students or professional men in Germany and Austria. Instructor and student in carpentry shop. CU, Jewish boy planing. Young men in wash room. Jews sitting at table, eating, smoking, chatting, exiting building, sunny. General view of Settlement, with community building. MS, greenhouse with Jews working. CU, working on pipe.
