After overcoming initial fears and agitation against the project, the school was inaugurated in 1802. The philanthropy of its Jacobson is discussed, as well as his disappointment in having been denied basic rights for his son. His letter of resignation to the Duke of Braunschweig is reprinted, as well as the reinstatement he received under certain conditions.
