Scope and Content
The publication gives a brief overview of the life of Dr. Maximilian Lilienthal, who was the head of a reform (haskala) school in Riga in the 1840s. He later moved to St. Petersburg by the request of Sergej Uvarov, where he influenced the tsarist government in the creation of Jewish haskala schools. Before the plans bore fruits however, Uvarov left his post and Dr. Lilienthal emigrated in 1845 to the United States. There he was influential in the rise of the reform movement.
