Scope and Content
The publication provides an historical overview of zje flourishing Jewish life in Poland during the Middle ages while other nations still persecuted them. It laments the failure of Polish Jewry to build on these developments beside the Hasidic movement. Further attempts to reform Judaism were halfheartedly encouraged or stifled depending under which regime the Poles and Jews found themselves. Jews were therefore excluded to participate in reform developments taking hold in western countries. The Russian revolution and the war led many Jews to abandon religion altogether and became atheists. During the war Dr. Pinchas Cohen and Carlebach enabled an understanding between Hasidic and Misbagden and created the orthodox Aguda-party which speaks for religious Judaism, whereas the educated classes remain indifferent. It is up to the reform movement to encourage these groups to become part of the Jewish-liberal spirit.
