Scope and Content
The booklet published in 1919 by the “Verein für jüdische Geschichte und Literatur in Berlin” (Association for Jewish History and Literature) contains a compilation of selected lectures on the topic of “Jews in the new Philosophy” with a special emphasis on Hermann Cohen. A handwritten note highlights the lecture “Why and what for are we Jews”. The introduction of the lecture is an overview of Jewish philosophers in recent history with a special mention of Hermann Cohen. It states that “materialism” as a philosophy doesn’t have any Jewish representatives. The speaker sees a new age rising that will bring a new order to mankind led by the league of Nations, with a reinstated Jewish state in Palestine. The second part answers the question “Why are we Jews?”
