Scope and Content

The publication discusses the origin of the “Kol Nidre” and its importance on Yom Kippur. The wrong accusations by Anti-Semites that it is the basis for absolution when giving an oath is refuted. The purpose of the prayer, its liturgical meaning at the beginning of Yom Kippur and its relevance is explained. The author claims that most likely the Kol Nidre was used to enable forcefully converted Jews to partake in the Yom Kippur services. The melancholic melody of the prayer is used to support the argument.
