Scope and Content

The publication is the printed version of a memorial speech by Rabbi Dr. Josef Eschelbacher on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Michael Sachs, on September 7th, 1908. The lecture reminisces on the changes in the 18th and 19th century in Jewish thought and customs, the beginnings of Haskalah and the resulting frictions in the communities. Michael Sachs was rabbi in Prague and a well-known author of religious texts. Together with with Leopold Zunz he worked on a new translation of the Bible. Poems by Ibn Gvirol, Nahum and Jehuda ha-Levi are incorporated in the lecture.
